What Smartphone would you prefer?

IPhone tends to lead the top in acceptance. Blackberry has quite decent corporate acceptance. There's the Palm Pre and the Google Android phones.

Without giving any consideration to the network that each one is tied to, i.e. if you could use the phone of your choice on your cellular network, which phone would you choose?

You mean there are other smart phones besides the iPhone?

I voted before I read the thread.. but with that said. I picked BB because Im with Verizon and have been for 8 years - Now if I had a choice of any and all id say iPhone

I love my iPhone. I've never liked any blackberrys that I've played with, but then again, I've just played with them, never actually used or depended on one.

Before my iPhone, I really liked my PPC6700/XV6700 (I had one for Sprint, and one for Verizon), windows mobile based phone.

iPhone great, couldn't live without it. Never liked Blackberrys, the Pre looks interesting, and that's about all I know...:)

I use a Blacberry Curve but I would prefer the HTC G1 (Google Phone). Sadly, I have a habit of dropping my phones and that is what I did to my HTC. |sad| What stops me from using the iPhone is the lack of an actual keyboard. It gives me "the willies" to have to tap the screen. For the same reason, I have to use a laptop with a pointing stick (i.e. trackpoint) rather than a touch pad.

My wife uses her iphone more then anything else on this planet. I've checked out the palm pre and i really like that one, so my vote goes there.

I'm in Australia where they lock you into plans for 14000 years... so I am still on some Nokia 'imbecile' phone :(

But I think I would choose iphone... cos apple is cool

I love the iPhone & all of it's capabilities. I especially love how videos look so damn good on the screen. It would have to be a pretty damn good upgrade to get me away from my iPhone.

I like my iPod Touch but the iPhone app store is riddled with shitty applications. Apple rejects useful apps like Google Voice and a Commodore 64 emulator while accepting garbage like the mirror application (it changes your screen to black so you can see your reflection on the screen's surface), numerous "flashlights", a shitload of "babes" apps and countless other shit. For a company that prides itself on quality it is keeping some pretty shitty company in its app store. They need to open that platform so serious developers will embrace it.

I don't like the shape of the Palm Pre -- it's too round. It reminds me of those virtual pet toys that were all the rage a few years ago.

I've been thinking about getting a Blackberry.

I haven't heard a whole lot about Android which makes me wonder if it's going to be a viable competitor to iPhone. I only read about it on tech web sites. That's great but unless it's embraced by the public it will remain a hobbyist's platform and never really take off.

Android has 12 phones online worldwide. The G1 and Mytouch 3G are on Tmobile in the USA. Verizon has announced their Android Phone which they claim will be out before Christmas. Motorola has announced its Cliq which is going to run on the TMobile network with the Blur interface -- an interface designed mostly for social media. Their price plan + capabilities MIGHT draw in teenagers that can't get the iphone for whatever reason.

Sprint has announced a Nokia phone (Nokia gave up Symbian for an Android phone - interesting choice). AT&T/Dell has mentioned early 2010 for their unit.

If you believe what they say, Android will be on all 4 major US networks by early next year. Blackberry is already on all four. IPhone is limited to AT&T, but, with some hackery, you can run it on TMobile without 3G.

Palm has phones that run on all four, but, their developers interface is less than simple -- almost worse than Apple's app interface. Apple did make a major change this week by allowing free apps to be upgraded within the app. That should eliminate the trial/limited/full version trio of apps that is clogging the store to a degree -- simplifying ratings, etc.

The real question was -- for the capabilities you want in a smart phone, which current phone suits your needs regardless of the network. As it stands, it looks like the IPhone took the lions share which I expected.

It led into a though of this. Apple developed a phone that is fairly expensive, which runs on a network that was unprepared for the data volume brought on it. In the USA, AT&T has brought on a ton of subscribers even though the monthly plans are not cheap......... during a recession.

Even social media has pushed people to utilize their phones to stay in touch minute by minute -- and that phone bill has a much higher priority than car payments, etc. based on some of the news reports.

Seems like designing a sexy product, even during a recession, still works.

so now we have "android phones" and "iphone" (which is like... 1) but winmo phones (of which there are like 1000x more) go into "other"? and the same goes for symbian phones... hummmm

deppends on what you need in a phone... if you're a typer, then you need a good qwerty. blackberry is good, but their dataplans are expensive. never the less, for emailing you won't find anything better EXCEPT a winmo phone paired with an exchange server 2007+ which does push to mail, which is what I'm using now (exchange servers are pretty rare outside of the corporate environment tho, definitely not available with web hosting companies :( ). never the less when the BB magnum gets out, it will go back on blackberry.

if you want a bit of everything, check out symbian on the nokia e72, for instance, or for smaller phones the e52, e55, e75... or check winmo on samsung b7330 omnia pro.

not to start a shitstorm here, but I don't see why people like iphones... they're like... huge, have no keyboard, they were pretty much shit on incorporated technology (do they have gps yet?) and expensive. other then the really cool touchscreen (not alone on the market anymore) and agressive marketing, it has nothing going on for it. IMO... unless you hang out on youtube all day (but even then you need to only view files, as anything done with that shitty camera is not uploadable material) you the iphone's not worth a second thought. actually, in europe things are completely different in what iphones go, 9 out of 10 people only buy an iphone for the hip factor.

if you're into touchscreen-only phones, HTC has now waaaay better alternatives, and while android is promissing is still too young to be considered and while it will definitely gain a huge market share, for now it's not worth it either (new os rev. coming up soon tho so that might change)

personally, for me at this point winmo does the trick like no other. you can basically find EVERYTHING you can dream of for it, and while NOT without faults, it's getting better lately and it's worth having a look, from a webster's pov - if only for the synchronization options that go with MS os's
