Hey, Windows 7 is out!!

I'm trying to get excited, honest. I mean it's big news, right? A new OS by Microsoft for crissake!

So, my laptop has Vista. People bitch about Vista, but I've had no problems to speak of. I could spend a hundred bucks and couple of hours or so and upgrade and have a laptop....with the same functionality.

Ok, that's not all that exciting.

I do however have two XP machines, and XP is getting kind of old, right? I could upgrade those puppies and have a brand new OS. But the fine print says you have to re-install all your software.

Not excited....:(

Why do Macs keep looking sexier? And Ubuntu...hell, just the name sounds exotic. Anyone get the feeling MS will be the Oldsmobile of computer software in a few years?

pc 2009-10-24 01:00 PM

XP rulez :)
I downgrade my Vista to XP a month after Vista crashed.
I don't think I'm gonna spend more money for Windows 7 just to have new OS, and re-installing all my programs is definitely NO for me.

Ramster 2009-10-24 01:17 PM

FUCK MICROSOFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have Vista and NOW they have a new OS? Why the FUCK should I PAY to upgrade? The only reason they have a new OS in Windows 7 is because vista is nothing but headaches!!

In my mind Windows 7 should be a free upgrade due to the headaches vista has and the people with XP should pay to upgrade because the software is old.

See the new MAC commercial? It's a CLASSIC!!!!!!!

LOL... Great Mac commercial...

Once you go Mac, you never go back...

bluebrit 2009-10-24 03:09 PM

I got a new laptop about 2 months back with vista installed but it also came with a free copy of win7 as an update once it released. The cd should be here in the next few weeks but I will not be installing it until I see just how good/bad it is from reports online and in the news.

What partially works against Microsoft and for Linux is that as time goes on people become more advanced computer users making the switch to Linux easier and more appealing. Times are different.

I beg to differ. While the pool of more experienced user does indeed keep getting larger, they're still a declining percentage of the overall market.

Those of us that use computers as our primary means of earning a living are a very small percentage of the total marketplace.

I am using XP, the news said XP came out in 2001

but ya cant upgrade from XP to windows 7 you have to upgrade to vista first

I am thinking about buying windows 7 full install and formatting my hard drive but..

I love Linux. I use Ubuntu everyday. I do, however, think that the biggest threat to MS is cloud computing. Once the average Joe uses web based apps as his/her primary tools, the operating system really doesn't matter. Google has known this for years. MS is finally catching on.

You buy a computer. It comes with MS. That's what you know and use. End of story, even though distros like Ubuntu are all most people need.

The only time I upgrade the OS is when I have to buy a new computer...

I'm Still Using XP On Both Of My Boxes & Have No Plans On Upgrading Unless I Get A New Machine. And Even Then I'd Probably Install XP On It.

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade from XP to 7, but you need to do a clean install, so you will need to manually back up all of your data.

This is the official upgrade chart: http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/files...rade-chart.png - don't you love its simplicity?

Still on XP myself, I've tried Linux in various flavours but I could never do without Macromedia/Adobe stuff.

I won't be getting 7 'til I buy a new computer.

Ramster 2009-10-26 08:32 AM

I loved XP. The only reason I even have Vista is because my PC with XP had a crash, power supply or motherboard and I had a second computer with Vista so I just started using it.

My next computer will definitely be a MAC

Tommy 2009-10-26 09:58 AM

my computer is getting very buggy so i am gonna need a format soon. I dont have the disks it came with and have never done it before so....

So far I've heard great things about Windows 7, I guess maybe because Vista sucks so much. I have a laptop with Vista and I'm planning on upgrading to Windows 7 soon.

JustRobert 2009-10-26 12:18 PM

I recently purchased a new system with XP Pro installed (also comes with Vista when I am ready to upgrade, lol) and I love it. All my old programs work better then ever now because its a much faster machine :D

Dell is still offering this on select systems and for those that want XP on a new machine should do so quickly before they remove this option now that 7 is coming out.

I do love the new Mac commercial

JohnnyR 2009-10-26 01:48 PM

I dunno if I'm getting old and don't do anything on my computers anymore or what... but I've had no problems with vista so far... just smooth sailing for me...

I've been hearing good things about Windows 7 as well, but I wouldn't change something that works for something that doesn't have at least service pack 1 out yet (especially if it comes from microsoft)... if you know what I mean

Evil Chris 2009-10-27 12:12 PM

I've heard from many already that Windows 7 is very good.

But with regards to upgrading to it.... why? I don't see the point.
I'll get a taste of Windows 7 when I get my next computer.

As for now, XP works fine on the PC next to me, and this one has Vista I think. ;)
Not broken, so not fixing.

vdc-loki 2009-10-28 08:21 AM

Honestly, the 'best' OS microsuck has put out was ME, stable, decent features, and you could still fix damn near anything with ease... you can still fix stuff now, just takes forever and is reminiscent of pulling teeth lol

I have NO desire to try 7 but I'm sure when I get the next batch of machines for my render studio I'll have no choice lol.

Right now I have:

3 Vista's
2 XP's
1 ME
1 98 SE (lmao srsly still works too)

Yeah me too. I even had 2 computers crash a few months ago when those viruses were floating around and I went back and got Dell to send me my restore disks (Windows XP) and reloaded that fresh even though I could have gone with Vista or waited for 7.

I will probably wait until early next year to buy a new computer w/7 pre-loaded. I know almost all OS's take a few months to work out the kinks and I'd like the cleanest version possible before you start patching/upgrading.

As for Macs...they are cool. I guess I've gotten so used to the keyboard shortcuts, right click, and other functions of a PC that doesn't work on a Mac. I would like to buy a Mac just for some sound editing and YouTube projects I do...but they are expensive and the ROI just isn't there. Where as I can build a powerful PC for $500 and that would get me a Mac from the 80's....

I'm just grateful that there are two solid OS we can choose from...as this wasn't always the case.

Actually 599 gets you a brand new Mac.

HowlingWulf 2009-10-29 04:27 PM

Well soon after I posted in here my hard drive collapsed and I've been unable to recover it, so I'm on my way to the store to determine my best upgrade option...
