AVN has lost touch with reality

They posted prices for their August show.

The show last year was a joke with a very small turnout.

I really expected much lower badge prices this year but I see that I was very wrong.

Holy crap.

Whales only i guess.

Ramster 2010-05-06 06:28 PM

So if someone decides last minute to go (which I'm sure many people do, I've done it before) the badge costs $450? Yeah right!!

Since there are two of us that would be $900 bucks just to walk in the door. |shocking|

MrMaryLou 2010-05-06 07:01 PM

Am I reading this right you only get the "Complementary Swag Bag" when you book a room.

Jim_Gunn 2010-05-06 08:47 PM

I have gone to Internext every year since I live close by but I am going to try and get a badge from a sponsor this year.

InfoGuy 2010-05-07 05:54 AM

I always book last minute since InterNext Florida is during hurricane season and badges are non-refundable. Last year's walk-in badge was $300 and the turnout was dreadful. I think the Diplomat only booked half the rooms last year. The opening night party last year was a joke. It was in a tiny first floor restaurant and cash bar. WTF is AVN thinking?

I think avn is thinking just having webmasters there isn't enough to make it work anymore. So it's just one big group of porn people gathering. They are hoping the video, etc. side of things will keep this trade show going for them at that location and time of year.

spazlabz 2010-05-08 10:51 AM

They had the 2010 AVN awards on I think it was Showtime last night. I guess if you can find a camera get your mugg and URL in front of it if at all possible maybe you could recoup those outrageous prices

Cyber 2010-05-08 01:37 PM

Oh my... the world crisis or something... those prices are only for huge wallets.

Other than the company running it, what does the AVN Awards in Las Vegas in January have to do with the AVN Show in Florida in August ?

Kroc 2010-05-09 03:16 AM

I guess it going to be empty this year.

Nothing really. As you said AVN operates both shows but the awards are for the video porn industry and the show in Florida is for the internet industry.

It does look like AVN is trying to attract the video industry to the Florida show but I'll bet porn people from LA are not going to fly across to Florida for a show like this.

While this has historically been one of the best shows for us, we stopped going to it and every other show a couple years back. The ROI of going to almost every show just hasn't been there for quite some time.

The idea of going to another show just to be bombarded by affiliate managers trying to get traffic from you with promises of reciprocal traffic that they never intend to fulfill at this point just nauseates me.

But I have to admit that I did love going to that show back in the day and thought it was one of the best for business in its heydey.

Greenguy 2010-05-10 04:16 PM

WOW! Even Far-L has stopped drinking the AVN Kool-Aid :D

SCORE-Cash 2010-05-15 09:14 PM

We are going since it's local. Hope some of you do decide to go... Cleo!

Apart from this show we don't go to any of the other shows as mentioned above as they don't have much ROI.

davion 2010-05-16 02:04 AM

My..Those prices are too much. There are lots of competition out there and they are using that kind of strategy? High price? Where's their practicality? :(

MeganAVN 2010-05-20 03:58 PM

Afternoon everyone!
I just saw this thread and wanted to comment. As most of you may not know the AVN Show is completely new and unique and unlike any other event. The summer show is no longer JUST Internext, and this may be where the confusion lies. The entire event has been created from the ground up with a heavy focus on the demands being presented today. We will have over 30 unique educational, workshop, and networking events. Not to mention that we will have two incredible keynote presentations. Both the attendee list and participant list is unlike any other event anywhere!
If you do business in the adult industry (on or offline), you really shouldn’t even consider not participating. There are so many opportunities that exist and if you work the show properly, the admission price is negligible.
Please just note that the price is really only $250, which is far less than most other events of this kind. You can do the entire weekend, including flight, hotel, and badge for right around $1,000, if you book early. You shouldn’t have any problem getting a tremendous return on this investment!
Feel free to email me or AIM me at MeganAVN. I’m happy to answer any questions any of you may have!
See you at the show! ;)

Visit our website if you haven't done so already at www.avnshow.com

A. what other events charge more than $250? Phoenix Forum? No. XBix? No. Cybernet Expo? No. $250 is not "far less than most other events"

B. You cannot do the show for under $1000. Your very own hotel and badge discount is $830 then you add the taxes and resort fees and you're at $1000 before the cost of a flight (another $200-400 or more from Canada) and before your food costs (which at that hotel are grossly expensive).

When I use to go to this show I'd spend $2000 minimum every time!

AdultLabsPromo 2010-05-20 04:48 PM

As Megan pointed out - this show isn't about the internet anymore.

Our business is B2B Internet only We don't work with consumers or anyone who works offline but now this show's attendance has a less targeted attendee list... that makes the increased price even more expensive because it means we'll me less of the people we want to do business with.

I still wish AVN the best of luck and who knows, we might go, but from a cost analysis perspective - making it more expensive to meet less of our target audience - this move reduces the value of the show for a B2B based business like ours.

Yeah, when they started watering it down to the point of being just colored water I just couldn't swallow it any longer...

InfoGuy 2010-05-21 04:10 AM

Megan,

Welcome to GG&J.

I agree with AdultLabsPromo that expanding the AVN Show with more people doesn't necessarily make the venue better. IMO, the original Internext was a better format for online adult businesses to learn, network and conduct business.

I understand the need for AVN to fill rooms at the Diplomat to keep the venue exclusive, but broadening the base of attendees with those who aren't primarily in the online space isn't the right way to go. Rather than driving up badge fees year after year, AVN should take a cue from Affiliate Convention, where sponsored affiliates pay nothing to attend. Just ask your former colleague Chris Lebrun about it. With lower badge fees, you'll get a larger and more targeted audience. Your sponsors and the Diplomat would both be thrilled with the results.

In all likelihood, I'm skipping this year's AVN Show to hear about the event from those that attended. If the feedback is positive, I might be back for the 2011 show. If not, there are plenty of other adult webmaster shows to attend.

My guess it will do decent. They couldn't continue with it as internext because last year it showed that it wasn't worth the $. So now they have this. It's them trying something new. My guess is it for sure will be better than what happened last year for internext, so it will be seen as a step in the right direction in their eyes as more $ will have come in. The big test will be the year after this one. Where if people didn't see an ROI to make it worth it.
