Tips for Link Lists

I've been giving some thought to building a link list for freesites and such, but I am a little bit unsure of the best sources for traffic. Because I don't see the point in starting a link list that wouldn't get traffic.

So what are some good ways I can generate traffic to my link list homepage? I don't see recips being source for enough traffic to get submitters coming in.

I've been curious too. Generally run link list is a long run, in these days the most important is choose good domain + suitable keyword I think ... I started Live Sex Cams in November 2010. Honestly, not lot work has been done; few trades + directory submissions (just few small ones). Traffic for January 132, February 207, March 11th 85. In this month I have 10 uniques/day + 22 google hits total. The question is, if this site will ever get any love from search engines ...

To have a linklist it's not everything. You need to make sure that you have something that interests webmasters in the first place, that could be a niche that has some seo value, or extra features (? World is not enough :)) that will make your place interesting enough to keep webmasters submitting to your linklist. In the mean time you need to submit sites ( with your recip too as well ) to major LL's as often as possible.
Then you need to make some good trades, some seo research, some social promotion and all of that may not be enough. Like you said it's a very long commitment, but don't rely only on your linklist, make it as one of many pieces in your network. Many here owns a network of lunklists and they could tell you that linklist is only a part of bigger web along with hubs , blogs etc ....
My point is this: don't build if you are here for quick buck.

The most difficult thing is maintaining it.
