ICANN approves .xxx for adult sites

Quote:

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said Friday it approved the .xxx domain for adult web sites after years of nixing the idea.

A spokesman for ICANN, which holds jurisdiction over top-level domains, confirmed the go-ahead.

ICM Registry, the nonprofit organization that has been pushing to establish .xxx, will distribute it to porn sites. Even before approval, the site hosted a start-up plan pending the proposed domain's entry.

"In order to provide an orderly process for members of the registrant community and to use our resources effectively during this intervening period, ICM has decided to undertake the first phase of the Industry Reservation Period," the group's site said.

In June, ICANN's board of directors approved the top-level domain, which is the technical name for the .com, .xxx or .net part of a URL . It was sent to the next committee for approval.

In the past, ICM Registry has argued that the .xxx domain is beneficial to the public, because it indicates a clear signal that the domain contains pornography

BASTARDS.

Cleo 2011-03-19 07:06 AM

Seeing as it isn't mandatory and way over priced for the cost of a domain I don't see it catching on at all.

Time to lock & load for our own civil war!!!

Is there a simple htaccess to block .XXX traffic???

Voltar 2011-03-19 02:26 PM

I agree with cleo...don't see it catching on..
they should just make a .KID domains for kids(G rated only) sites only and they that would give them a total porn free surfing experience..

buttster 2011-03-19 02:41 PM

yeah I agree with Voltar, seems that would be a good way to go, not sure how they would police every .kid domain though.

terry 2011-03-19 10:16 PM

Wont change my life any.

Probably End Up Doing Something Like RTA But For Kids Domains Instead

The Epic 2011-03-19 10:49 PM

I don't see a need for this. Why would everyone get rid of their .coms for this?

SheepGuy 2011-03-20 01:40 AM

It's worth worrying about, if you like to worry.

Ms Naughty 2011-03-20 08:38 PM

I see two things to worry about. One is the need to buy the .xxx domains of existing brands to prevent squatters and the domains are ridiculously overpriced. It's just a blatant money making ripoff.

The other thing I see is our stupid government in Australia seeing it as a means to expand censorship. You've got a guarantee of freedom of speech. We don't. I could envisage a law forcing any adult enterprises to use the tld, which would then be mandatorily filtered. ICANN has just made suppressing speech so much easier.

This news came two days after the Obama administration announced that
they want more control over domain name registration. Just what kind of
control do he has in mind for .xxx? Only one thing comes to my mind - making it mandatory.

petergg2 2011-03-22 06:20 PM

I think they just whant make a extra buck,
they know how many there is adult domains so they whant just sell next few milion domains ;)

and idea with .kids extension have more sense and Im sure that when ICANN will earn again some extra money they provide such extension too

One of the things that frustrates me is how people outside of the industry (and even supposedly sex-positive mouthpieces) do NOT understand the many ways in which .XXX sucks or at least lays the foundation for massive suckage.

I tried to write something about it for a more general audience but since nobody's commented on it yet I'm not sure if it got through to anybody:

http://titsandsass.com/?p=676

People outside of the industry totally don't get it and think it sounds cool. A lot of them don't understand what would be WRONG with making porn be restricted to .XXX (not that it would ever work, unless all of that talk of the governments of the world and ICANN trying to work together to regulate the internet actually goes somewhere, which is mostly freaky).

Ms Naughty 2011-03-28 08:13 PM

That's a great blog post Trixie. I'd comment but you've said it all.

smashits 2011-04-06 06:32 AM

One of the main reason of doing this is to protect children from pornography, I think it is a good move.

It is just like movies having A, U/A ,PG Certificate.
