Encounter with a bum-need advice
 

For all of you who live in Toronto, I had the scariest encounter with a bum a few days ago at the corner of King st. and Spadina.

I was sitting in my car, stopped at a red light, when out of the corner of my little eye, I saw an OBVIOSLY drug induced bum stumbling towards my car, violently shaking a cup in his hand. I had my windows rolled up, when he comes right up to my window, and starts POUNDING THE SHIT OUT OF IT mumbling about money. I shook my head "NO", when he proceeded to grabbed onto my sideview mirror, and attempt to TEAR IT off my fucking car. I started screaming at him, "What the hell are you doing?", (which by the way, didn't phase him in the least)through the window, when I noticed the light turned green. I hit the gas in a fit of rage and fear, while he was still holding onto my mirror, and watched in my rear view mirror as he stumbled and fell.

After stopping at the next red light, I checked for any type of damage to my mirror. No damage done, but my mirror was all bent in the wrong direction.

My question to you is...what should I have done? Called the cops although there was no visible damage?

You should have pulled out your 9mm and pointed it between his eyes. Drunks and druggies recognize those. :D

I'd just be glad that I was the person in the car and not the bum.

I've always thought the crime in Toronto was out of hand. That's why I moved back to Washington, DC :) You dod the right thing by getting out of there but there was no need to wait for a green light if the traffic ic clear for you to go. Just get out of there and be safe. Calling the police wouldn't hurt because they could at least check it out and maybe get the bum off the street.

It sounds like it went as well as it possibly could... imagine calling the cops to report him and being charged with dangerous driving or something for endangering a pedestirian.

Not suggesting you were wrong in any way... that would have frightened me.. and I wouldn't be surprised if I had driven through the red light when he started bashing the window... it's not like there's anything you can do anything with someone like that.. hurting them is going to have about as much effect as trying to reason with them unfortunately.

You did the right thing Sarah. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It can happen anywhere in TO now.

I remember once, sitting in my van on Bay, watching a bum stagger down the sidewalk on the south side. A guy in a suit, carrying a briefcase was walking toward him. The bum jumped him without warning, flailing away at him. The guy ducked, spun, hit the bum with his briefcase and jogged up the sidewalk.

It was almost comical, if it wasn't so scary.

Of course, if that had of happened in Washington DC, the guy would have pulled a 9mm and shot the bum right between the eyes. LOL

I'm always worried about this same situation when I drive down a certain street here in Indianapolis where the hookers and homeless people a drug dealers hang out. If anyone approaches my care for any reason, I'd gas it through a red light...heh.
