Any problems with using mp4s on freesites?

I havn't tried using .mp4s on freesites before - are there any issues I should know about?

I was surprised when my machine played them in quicktime when in a browser - settings I suppose - but only in the browsers? still must be settings, I'll have to google it.

Cleo 2011-10-07 07:09 AM

No problems here. :)

Your vids will also play on devices like the iPhone and iPad if you use the mp4 format.

I think Windows uses will need to have QuickTime installed though.

Certainly no :)

I know that Pimp Roll movie galleries use mp4's & they play just like a flash video (in Chrome)

I have no problem with them.

Bill 2011-10-08 03:42 AM

ohhhh coool an embed capacity - that's neat.

Code:

<
object CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B"
CODEBASE="
http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" width="720" height="420">
<
param name="src" value="2.mp4">
<
param name="autoplay" value="false">
<
param name="controller" value="true"><embed SRC="QTMimeType.pntg" TYPE="image/x-macpaint"
PLUGINSPAGE="
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download" QTSRC="videofilename.mp4"
width="
720" height="420" AUTOPLAY="true" CONTROLLER="true">
<
/object>

from http://www.free-video-hosting.net/embed-mpeg-4.php - slightly modified.

Bill 2011-10-10 04:20 PM

Who doesn't this embedded mp4 movie play for - and can anyone tell me why?

http://www.interracial-sex-xxx.net/t...ex-gallery.htm

Cleo 2011-10-10 05:12 PM

You are linking to a file called videofilename.mp4

You need to change that to the actual file name.

Bill 2011-10-10 08:47 PM

ahhh - so the code plays for pcs but not for macs, and the file name repeats twice in the embed code because it is intended to serve the file differently for the two platforms.

And I changed the filename only for the part of the code that plays in pcs.

It plays fine for me.

I'll have to read more about the embed code parameters - I don't like how small the video bar is under the vid.

Cleo 2011-10-10 09:54 PM

I think this is the code you are looking for.
http://terrizamore.com/b/quicktimeembed.html

But IMO you are better off using this player as the user does not need to have QuickTime installed and it will still play as a mp4 in non flash devices.

JW player seems like it should be nice but so far I get a blank black box with audio, the video does not play or display - I assume I am doing something wrong, lol....

Wonder if it works in another browser?

Cleo 2011-10-10 11:58 PM

I also get sound with no video when I try to embed your video in JW Player. Other videos work, but not yours.

Maybe this is the reason

Bill 2011-10-11 01:42 AM

Back to the videocharge then, to encode it differently - there were two options under mp4 - mpeg4 and h264 - lol - so I just picked the default which was the mpeg4.

Guess the player isn't quite as universal as the sales text implied, but, non-obvious solutions can be a business advantage lol.

Cleo 2011-10-11 10:08 AM

I ran your movie through my encoder and made it h.264.

http://terrizamore.com/b/player/example.html

This reminds me that I need to start using this updated embed code on the member’s areas that I maintain.

Bill 2011-10-11 07:06 PM

Yes, I messed with it awhile and figured it all out - mp4 is a container format, so for that viewer the container has to contain a h.264 not an mp4 - which is easy enough once you know that, altho it does seem to add some size to the file. And required me to re-encode various videos.

Then you gotta do some crap with centering teh div and using a table to hold the div to get it to center in a page, which had me perplexed for a bit til I realized it's a fucking IE issue.

It's a nice looking viewer, better than the default quiktime.

Cleo 2011-10-11 08:57 PM

I didn't know how much this has been updated since the last time I downloaded the source which was sometime ago. I'll be using this newer source on everything forward as I've been using embedded mp4 vids in member areas for a few years now. It's almost totally put an end to members having trouble viewing movies.

I just tend to put everything in a table that is centered as that seems easy and works ever where.

You probably want to add mp4 to your hotlinking htaccess file.

Not sure if I like the viral plug-in or not.

Are you submitting galleries with embedded vids too? Any issues with getting accepted, or is it too soon to tell?

LeRoy 2011-10-24 02:57 PM

Sound like a good way to go :)

I like freesites with streaming video. It's about time I made the switch |thumb

Just one noob question comes to mind. Are mobile devices able to play also *.flv embed vids?

Some can but most can't.

If you use JW Player to embed a mp4 file into it then it will serve up the mp4 file to mobile devices and play it in a Flash player for Flash enabled devices.

Jeremy82 2011-10-28 11:31 AM

Thanks for the info Cleo, it's interesting that most of sponsors prefer *.flv
