The size of 98

Anyone know how much memory Windows 98 needs?

I am trying to move a drive with Windows 98 on it from a defunct old computer to a working old computer. The computer was running Windows XP happily on half a gig of memory. I have since tripled the memory to one and a half gigs, but I still get a "insufficient memory to run Windows" error on bootup. I don't want to spend too much money on improving the system as I only need it for a couple of programs that won't run on later versions of Windows. And it is not a case of adding more memory then testing it and going back for more if necessary, because the system is so old I can only get suitable RAM from a guy at a computer fair who specialises in old memory, and the fair only happens twice a month. So can anyone tell me in advance of the next fair how much memory I gotta buy?

It looks like the problem may be that you have too much RAM.
Take a look at the pages below.

Thanks. That is annoying, because I spent more on the memory than on the computer (computer cost £25 memory cost £37). If I had known this in advance I not only would not have this problem, I would also have saved money!

Thanks, but the reason I bought the computer was to run a few Windows 98 programs that won't run on later versions of Windows. I cannot see them running on a Linux OS! (Although you are correct in that I do need a Linux box, but only for "the fun of it" not for serious work as all the software I use is Windows software.)
