Seeing as I don't think I live near any of you...

My step-daughter is organizing my family & friends for The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's annual Out Of The Darkness Walk here in Buffalo.

I know money's tight for everyone, so if you can't donate, I COMPLETELY understand. But if you can, please go to my page & read how you can help |shake|

Wish I could help but I'm barely making enough for my expenses now.

ecchi 2015-08-03 03:03 PM

Clicking the "donate" button just got me an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error.

That's not an error. It's the IE7 Homepage |couch|

Whatever it is, it is bloody expensive. I went there to donate, and was unable to do so. At the moment I am away from home and on my laptop, so can only use XP/IE8. A fair percentage of surfers have nothing but XP/IE8, so they will never be able to donate. So if, as you suggest, this fault is due to the fact that I am using an outdated OS, at the end of the day your Charity will get 20% less money than they would have done if the page had been fully browser compatible!

Wife donated, wish we could have helped more but as you said every little bit helps. :)

I would suggest that if a surfer is still using XP/IE8 that would usually imply they have no money

You need to look into the companies you use to collect money for you. I left a donation but only because it was you. In normal circumstances I would not have donated using that company, whatever the charity. The problems were:
  1. I donated by PayPal, but they demanded a lot of information they did not need (home address and telephone number), had no right to demand. The idea of paying by PayPal is that you do not have to give this info! The only reason to collect this info is so that they are able sell my information on to other people.
  2. Under their policies for using your email address they say that if you live outside the USA, you agree that they are bound by the American privacy laws only. This disclaimer is used because the EU has stricter anti-spam laws to America, this disclaimer makes it easer to sell donors email addresses for spam.
  3. I wanted to donate 100% anonymously - both name and amount. I thought I had stated "donation name and amount anonymous". When I got to the end screen I found I had not (probably my mistake) I had only made my name anonymous, not the amount. They asked me to check and confirm my details, but gave no way to change it, I either went with it as was, or cancel my donation entirely. Since this was after we had gone through PayPal, it would mean that the company collecting the money would already have my money but not pass it on to the charity!!!!!

Any one of these would stop me donating if it were anyone else (well, except the last one - it was too late by then). However I guess it would not have been a problem then because as I said a while back, I tried to donate while I was away and got a "sorry we don't accept money from people using old computers" error. If it had not been you, I would not have tried again when I got home, I would have said "FUCK YOU THEN" and not bothered!

ecchi - it's not like I organized this or anything lol. My step-daughter heard about it & decided to get the family & friends involved :)

...but thanks for the donation - I was wondering who that anonymous donation was from |smooch|

Yeah, sorry. I get very angry when I see someone using a charity for a con job, but I realised a few hours after posting that this was the wrong place to post. Unfortunately by then it was too late to change the post.

I did also email the company, but they have not even bothered to either explain their actions or deny it.

ecchi 2015-08-06 01:22 AM

Oh, and I have just realised the I should also make VERY CLEAR that my comments are about the Internet company collecting the funds NOT the charity itself. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is using a payment company in the same way that the rest of us collect payments using people like PayPal and CCBill. It is that payment company who is collecting personal details NOT The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Greenguy 2015-08-06 09:42 AM

ecchi - No worries :) While my anger didn't come close to yours, I was kinda pissed off about the coding on their site as far as missing meta's & what comes up when you share their links on Facebook (my page looks MUCH better than theirs when shared IMHO)

BTW: Our team has 11 members & has raised $385 so far |thumb

Here's the link to my page so you don't have to scroll back up :D
