HTM or HTML?

Does it matter which extension (HTM or HTML) you use in regards to optimizing your site for the search engines?
I always use index.html for my index page, and name everything else as .htm.
What do you guys think? |juggle|

It doesn't matter, either one.

I always try to link to directories and not pages if I'm able.

All the category pages on link-o-rama.com are .htm pages & I'm still getting SE results, so it probably doesn't matter as far as the SE spiders are concerned.

As long as Googlebot can find your default index.. it can be called anything you like

This will depend on your server setup and the way you link to sites/pages.

htm/html/shtml etc makes no diff...

As GG said.... Most of my pages are .shtml and all are ranked

I believe the only difference between .htm and .html is that Billy Gates could not handle a four letter extension.

Nice, thanks. :)

Just one of those weird naming things I never knew if there was a standard for.

Chop - oddly enough, my original pages were designed partly on an old Windows 3.1 machine which of course meant they had to be .htm pages :D

Ahhh...the good old days of editing in Notepad :D
