How Do I Prevent MGP Hotlinking?

What are you guys using to prevent hotlinking on your MGP galleries?

I've heard good things about antihotlinking .com, but I can't have my entire server un-hotlinkable. I need to be able to hotlink from some domains (thumbnails for toplists, pic posts etc.).

Thanks!

Kcat,

You can use htaccess to prevent hotlinking. I *think* you should be able to code it to allow specific domains to hotlink.

Do a search here or other boards and search engines on htaccess.

Yeah htaccess works just fine with mpg files. :)

Go about two thirds of the way down on this page for my notes on htaccess.

I'm no expert but Cleo's htaccess thingy does work nicely. Wmv's are the only thing you cannot protect I believe. For movies if you put them all in the same directory then you should be able to protect that entire directory without effecting the root or other directories.

I just put my htaccess in the root of my sites to protect everything.

Htaccess doesn't work correctly on Windows media files and Real media files since the player has no way of sending the correct referral information.

I mostly submit WMVs since the file size is so much smaller for the same quality. :(

could DRM protect them? not sure how it works with hotlinking

check out playadrm.com

they have many solutions to allow people to have the movies but for you to capitalize on the peopole who have taken them

we are also working on something like this to offer to webmasters but its not even close to being done, so I'll plug them for now :-)

Personally I think wmv files suck. I especially hate the fact that they don't have a real movie control like mpg movies have, but maybe it is just that I'm a Mac user. I do find mpg to look better, but again that is just my opinion. Not being able to prevent hotlinking is the deal breaker for me.

AdultLegal-Jim
I think DRM is a whole other can of worms. LOL

I agree, and they load much quicker than mpeg. Unfortunately there is no easy way to protect them. |sad|

Absolutely. I didn't know MPGs were so easy to protect. You've converted me!

Thanks for all the help everyone!

This will protect *all* formats of video files, even WMV. The catch is it does require both cookies and javascript - so if your surfers have either disabled they won't get the movie.

.htaccess file:
===============
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_COOKIE} !(^|(.+;)*)id=valid(;.*|$)
RewriteRule .*$ http://www.yourdomain.com/cheaters.html

javascript to set the cookie:
=============================

Instructions:
=============
1) Add the javascript to the section of the document containing the links to your videos.
2) Modify the .htaccess code above to reflect your proper domain and page to redirect hotlinkers and place it into your directory/folder containing the videos you want protected.
3) Upload the files.
4) HUGE PROFITS!

Cleo 2004-06-25 09:29 PM

The problem with that is very few places are going to list you with that code on your pages.

Tommy 2004-06-28 10:09 AM

I just added wmv to my htaccess files
I thought they were all protected

lets try this and see

Cleo 2004-06-28 10:14 AM

Doesn't seem very protected to me.

SHIT!!!!

when i click on it from the board it redirects me

Cleo 2004-06-28 10:27 AM

Yeah it redirects me from the board too but does nothing if I want to hotlink it in a page. :(

Opti 2004-06-28 12:36 PM

I thought Tommy had de-bunked a myth I had never bothered to test for a moment there! :p

Nubianprince 2004-06-29 08:30 PM

you can use .htaccess .. there are also php scripts that prevent that kinda thing ..
