Banning counters

There is an interesting discussion going on about counters and specifically sextracker.
The Hun and worldsex might ban counters cause the advertisements they show often suck and go way beyond what is tolerable.
The disadvantage they see is that advertisers might demand a 3rd party stats and drop out if they dont allow this.
I know Greenguy has banned counters for some time now. What did it do to your advertisers marker Greenguy?
Maybe other people have banned counters as well and have some feedback?

Cleo 2004-07-01 08:27 AM

Pornopat your sig is too big, 120x60 or smaller please.

As far as counters I also have them banned and many TGPs have had them banned for a long time.

Thank you Cleo, I changed it.

Did you see an effect on the amount of advertisers when you banned them? How did advertisers respond?

Cleo 2004-07-01 08:52 AM

I don't see why banning counters would affect my advertising.

As far as submits it really hasn't affected them at all, I'm getting more then ever. Actually only a fraction of my submits were still using counters anyway before I banned them.

Advertisers might want to see "indepent" numbers about visitors. Like this they have to trust on your numbers. So it gives them one less tool to judge you by.

I too will more than likely ban counters as well, never did like them - they are deceptive and tricky looking..

All my advertisers are affiliates so why would they want to see my stats? I do get phone calls, e-mails, ICQs, flowers at my front door, etc. asking me to send more traffic. LOL

I don't know where you are getting your information but your assumptions are false.

Linkster 2004-07-01 09:08 AM

Have had counters banned on submits for about a week on Linkforsex as well - not that everyone reads the new rules :)

As far as advertisers - there are plenty of other ways to insert a counting script other than the sextracker and other counters - it wouldnt affect tgp posters or LL submitters as they can count theirs using server logs and a good stats program - the commercial counters that people have been complaining about tend not to be a good choice if you are looking for accurate stats as they usually get put on the bottom of the page and are affected if someone doesnt let the entire page load (which does happen a lot more than most think) with an average difference on my sites of at least 25 %.

Not a lot to do with this thread but, conservatively 80% of all 3rd party counters are evil bloodsuckers.

I wish I could tell you what one LARGE counter owner told me they could already do to surfer's browsers about 2 years ago. But, I was told in confidence. Just believe me, counters screwing with browsers is nothing new and it has only gotten worse. When we opened GGandJ, we used what we thought was the least offensive. Where you let the counter people know what type of site, we told them "Webmaster Resource". You would think the banners they would use would have something to do with Webmasters, right? One day we looked and the banner they were using on this site was clearly for surfers. It was then we decided...no more 3rd party counters.

I got them here:

Why you feel they are false? Which ones?

Are you talking about counters on a paysite programs tour?

I really don't see how me dropping counters effects any advertising that I have, since none of it is prepaid.

I can imagine this. :-)

The hun for example also sells spots though. You might sell bannerspots?
Still though....I think the market has shifted. Advertisers/paysites have become much more competitive for traffic and the ones sending out traffic might profit more then in the past.

That is a good point to keep in mind. I never gave this any thought. I do use stats on my server by the way. So no sextracker or something like that.

Yes unfortanetely you hear a lot of this. Makes you wonder why some sites do allow counters.

Both on the own site and galleries/freesites submitted.
I did not know none of it is prepaid on your site. So like Cleo its purely as an affiliate?

I guess with having this as a method its not important to see counters.

If I buy a spot I'll see how much traffic they send me in my own server stats. If I don't see the traffic that they said they had then I would stop buying spots.

I would do the same and have done the same. I got burned for $1000 on paid spots on a site somewhere. I will never advertise there again but still I am out $1000 for this lesson.
Some advertisers might think twice before doing this.
(Not me, I moved on to the next site and spent twice the amount without knowing facts and got lucky this time)

Really dude....I can not look inside your head. I dont know much about your opinions in general. I will admit to that.
Are you saying everything posted on GFY is bs?
Cause that is what I am thinking right now. If so I dont agree at all. 95% is bullshit but when people like The Hun and the guys from Worldsex post here I dont think they are discussing if they would hit it or not...

I know the hun and I know he doesn't post there.

You may be confusing him with "hun" from this board who may post there.
