Overture/Google etc

I am wanting to test the waters with a PPC campaign to see what types of revenue I can generate. From those of you who are experienced in using Overture and the like what would you suggest for a newbie to the game of PPC do? What are the keys to making it work.

I was reading today in another thread to have an FPA as the link from the SE instead of going right to the site. What other things should i make sure I do? Should I stay away from the big keywords to start? Is being 3rd on the list ok? 5th? etc? All of this is really new to me and while I dont want to waste a bunch of money without getting signups, I dont want to get raped on charges either.

Can you set a cap say of $100 in clicks so that I dont get charged $1000?

Thanks,
Andy
