I use one of Coffee Cups programs called Google Site Mapper (http://www.coffeecup.com/google-sitemapper/). It's really easy to use but not sure how effective it is.

I don't know how UW does it, but I personally make each thumb by hand so that they're a custom size. It only takes a few minutes to do and IMO looks much better than a program generated thumb.
