That's not what I meant exactly, but I know this method is gaining popularity by SEO spammers and I am against it.

I've read from several sources that using CSS for formatting purposes is good idea and it helps with SERP positions. The SE crawlers don't care about formatting and will never request the blah.css file, what they index and care about is the text on the page, so using CSS instead of formatting in the index.html file makes their job easier.
