Up to 16 is ok, but 1 more colum and the surfer gets confused? One could have 30 and the surfer would know to zip past to get tot he Enter link. More traffic flows into the same page.
Truly, I doubt my site will be the 1st freesite they've ever seen and if they get confused over that then I doubt they'll be potential buyers.
But
Perhaps it's time I split into two index pages though.

Yes, it will also help you gain exposure to your advertising on your main page by limiting the number of outbound links. Traffic leaks are a killer for sales conversions!
