Well, there are at least two things you have to balance with galleries. The first is getting listed, and getting listed well, with good positions. The second is making the sale, convincing the wary cheapskate TGP surfer to close the deal and type in the numerals.

I've heard a lot of people complain that the conversions of the fancy graphic intensive galleries are unusually lousy.

But there are still a lot of TGP owners who seem to think that fancy graphics are "pretty", or something; at least there had been a marked tendency in this past year for high graphics galleries to get listed above plainer galleries.

This isn't true of all TGPs, some still prefer the "old-fashioned" look, and I think I'm seeing a trend away from high-graphics galleries pushing out plain galleries in the past two-three months.

But, if you are getting listed in the first ten positions with fancier galleries, even if the gallery ratios are bad, your sales may be better, because the juiciest surfers buy on the first gallery they see that pushes their button. So, the closer to the top, the more juicy traffic, the better sales.

I would say the day of the pure "plain gallery", three rows of thumbs and a couple banners with text, is pretty much over. The sponsors that are using them are sans clue.

I myself like to build hybrid designs, with a touch or two of graphic "bells and whistles", but emphasizing the sell text. Simple, but with a custom-built look.
