The egg was first. The chicken evolved from a series of egg laying animals. The chicken was a mutated version of this animal. This change took place over millions of years. The first animal to drop an egg was a mutatation from an animal that did not normally lay eggs. Somehow it worked and it bred and more were born. This repeated itself until we had the modern day chicken.
at least according to darwin, who apparantly was mentally deranged.
