The answer to your first question depends on a few qualifiers (your 2nd Q being one of them).
Who do you submit to? What niche(s)?
Personally I've never bothered to check hits on individual freesites. Submitting 20-25 sites/month to about 30 LLs I'm getting roughly 8-10K hits/day, but at the end of the day money talks; you can't put hits in the bank.
