I can correct my kids' behavior by counting to three. I don't have to spank them. Know why? Because I have done it on multiple occasions and they damned well know that I will do it again. They've never been grounded and they've never had a 'time-out'. They have always had the option of either controlling their behavior or feeling the smack on their butts. Or even worse - losing toys. I haven't had to spank them in a long time and everyone thinks my kids are complete angels. Proper corporal punishment is all a matter of doing it for the right reasons and never threatening to do it but failing to follow through. Same as any promise made during behavior correction. If you threaten to drag them out of the mall when they're acting up, you damned well better do it or they will walk all over the parent forever.
