I must tell you that if the laptop is from compaq dont bother trying to take it apart they have some kind of special screw driver and head on the screws. Typical compaq bullshit.

Thanks for the advice, dude. I was just going to toss it until I read your post yesterday, but we've arranged to put a day aside next week to visit the nearest town. The only thing I want off it are actually some story ideas that I never got round to copying. Of course, you know what this means, April will turn it into a shopping trip. lol
