help with dvd burning

Ok I have decided to move a ton of DV tapes to dvd. I have never done this. I spent last night pulling the video from the tape to an avi with MS movie maker and then trying to use dvd santa to make the dvd. The video quality is fine but the audio is really slow. It's playing like 10 times slower then it needs to be. I can be in the middle of the video and the audio is still roughly a the 1st 10 minutes. It's that long drawn out sound. IE when someone says hello, on the dvd it's like helllllllllloooooooooo really deep and the voice is dropped very low. I'm not looking to do anything special, i just want to transfer the stuff. I tired this 3 times last night. 2 times the audio was screwy one time the audio was great but the image was totally black. Anyone know of good free software to use. I don't want to keep buying software only to find out it's not working for me. I have videos of family members that I know they want. It would be nice to give it to them. Any help please. jugg
