Regarding the editor...I'm a big believer in hand coding. If you must use an editor, make sure you know every piece of superfluous code it inserts doesn't cause problems.
Anything that insists on uploading as you build...I wouldn't touch. Those are functions I prefer to keep separate.
You've got nothing to worry about with the 'village idiot' status. There are MUCH more capable candidates around here for that title! Actually, I'll bet you can find a thread right now that trumps your minor transgressions quite easily
