I find that linking to anything and everything helps. I offer a mix of pics and text. I think a mix is good, because people who only want pics will scan for them, the people who want to read will do so.
My blog has about 500 entries now, is taking in a fair amount of search engine traffic a day and has some rediculous amount of inbound links. its no fleshbot, of course, but it aint bad
