The initial versions of NATS did not allow for the unencoding of links to my knowledge.

Anyone that is running the NATS V2 or better has them in there (including OCCash...so you can add that to Chop's list - LOL).
The only point I would like to make about the unencryted codes is that they are much more likely the fail (or get jacked) than the encrypted ones. A LOT of computers have Spyware / Scumware that looks for strings in linkcode like ref=xxxjay and can change them to ref=spyware'scode. With the encrypted (while not foolproof) will experience less of these problems.
