If you wanna check out a Mac to just try why not pick up an older iBook from Ebay that has been upgraded to OS X and get a feel for what you'd need to buy software wise for it to be useful to you?
Go to a computer "superstore" if ya can and just look at different models. A lot of notebook look great these days.
