Sure you can. To quote Tommy - "Most webmasters are assholes".
99.945% of the pricks you sent your newsletter too probably deleted it without looking and that other less than 1% looked at 100 free sites with the same template THEN deleted it. You can safely improve the templates without angering the 4 newbie fucks who may have listed them.

Changing colors does not a new template make. You need to screw with structure and thumb sizes as well.
