It will also help if your spouse has had a couple of psych courses so they'll be able to adequately understand and cope as you become increasingly introverted, socially anxious, and generally bitter at your lack of success while being unable to break free from that which causes you the most pain. Having a dog who can absorb a few kicks helps too.
