I can't imagine how a subdomain can work FOR you in SEO, except the text in the url itself, and maybe the time of ownership for that domain.

Have you considered a subdirectory?

northwestwetspot.com/blog/

You'll get more SE benefits if you do it that way.

Furthermore, it's a good idea to keep the blog tied to the site, IMO.
