"intranet" is the 'Americanisation' of "internet". I would assume this was to prevent confusion with "Internet". However the word "internet" was around
before the Internet was created. The capital I was put onto the word "internet" as a name after it ceased to be a 'military only' network.
Then many years later a confused American coined the term "intranet" so he would not get Internet and internet muddled up.
Actually the last sentence is a guess, but the rest is accurate. Intranet is a new word, created long after internet and Internet were first used.
Although what you do if you want to start a sentence with "internet" is beyond me!
