I didn't say that. At least I didn't mean to imply it. Google will generally use the description provided by Open Drectory (plus some random text from your page) when it manufactures the description used for their search results. If you're not listed at Open Directory, then it uses your meta tag description. But this is meaningless in terms of page optimization since most experts now say that with the exception of the title tag, keywords are no longer harvested from meta tags.
I'm not trying to step on the toes of any time-honored optimization strategies here, but merely sharing what I've learned from my research. Of course, everyone is entitled to a different opinion, which is what makes forums like this so useful.
