Well, that's the greatest thing about this software. You do not need FMS but you could use it with RED5, an opensource alternative for Flash Media Server which is 100% free.
I've tested RED5 extensively and it works very well, however, it did crash about every 2 weeks requiring a reboot of RED5. It would be possible to setup a cron to check if RED5 is crashed to automaticly reboot it in case it crashes so it will remain working well.
