I thought this was interresting.
SOPERTON — A cousin of Treutlen County’s convicted sheriff has been appointed to run the sheriff’s department.
Jeff Hooks, who has been a full-time deputy for 18 years, became interim sheriff Tuesday. He’s the third cousin of Wayne Hooks, who was found guilty Friday of using excessive force at a jail after arresting two men.
Probate Judge Grace Proctor appointed Jeff Hooks despite his relationship to Wayne Hooks.
‘‘I picked Jeff Hooks on the merits that he has been a deputy all these years,’’ she said. ‘‘He knew everything that was going on in that department, and I figured everyone could work together.’’
Jeff Hooks will run the department until a special election can be held.
‘‘I’m not Wayne Hooks and I’m not trying to fill Wayne Hooks’ shoes,’’ said Jeff Hooks. ‘‘We are here as a team to try to hold this sheriff’s department together.’’
