A common thing around here is the 30A -> dryer plug. Turn off the main, unplug the dryer, plug in the cord, viola, no real wiring. If you don't turn off the main, your neighbors that share your two phases can get power and you will have very low amperage 7700 volts at the other side of the transformer that feeds you. I hear the linemen hate that. During one hurricane cleanup, I did make a few suicide plugs which were handy for the quick hookup.
