I would think you'd be much better off keeping the content relevant on a domain.

It depends, if the thrust of the site is behind the blog and you build the rest of your site around it, then it's best to do so in the root.
If the intent of the blog is to support something else, like your hub, then put it in a directory.

One of the reasons blogs work well with the SE's is the inherent linking structure. Since much of your content is interlinked keeping a blog current using a non-dynamic approach would be a major choir.
I build my posts in Dreamweaver and copy that into the post section of my blog.

I've never done a poll but I believe people stick with bloggers they tend to agree with. As far as politics and porn, I do softcore type of stuff that seems to work well (although my blog isn't necessarily politically based just opinion based)

I definitely write to my surfer, so I do believe surfers read what you write. At least for me, it's a different way to sell, more of a soft sell.

If it works with what your doing on your blog, then embedding video clips from youtube and the others definitely add to your blog.

If I create a "sales" blog where every post is about trying to get a sale, then I get bored with them quickly and end up throwing an RSS feed on the blog and letting it free-wheel. On the other hand, if the blog is a part of me, my opinion, likes, fantasies, then most of the time it is pretty easy to write for although I will go through times of writers block

No, in fact it could help your main page rank much higher, or at least a little higher.
