WPMU only builds blogs in sub-domains I believe.
There are a few tools out that will let you run multiple blogs across multiple domains.
Blogs Organizer from Kaktusan is the one I'd recommend. You can use it's blogging script or post to WP blogs via xmlrpc. It also has a feed reader built in so you can either mix sponsor RSS with hand written posts or edit the RSS feed prior to posting.
I think it supports multiple blog platforms but it's been awhile since I actively used it.
