I bought a "PHP/MySQL For Dummies" book and just started playing around. (I wanted to do it from the inside out - the long way, in other words.)
DO NOT try this approach, unless you have unlimited supplies of coffee and patience. These days, nearly any kind of routine or content you need for nearly any kind of website is out there, free for the downloading. The conversions have dwindled as the competition has increased, but it is easier to "flatten out" and offer a variety of different sites in different niches. Don't necessarily focus on One Big Project; diversify into as many different income streams as you can manage. As Toby mentioned, the landscape changes over time.
