With LinkX, I recently turned off email confirmation for new user accounts, but I approve new accounts manually. Seems to work OK for me.

I would try to get to the bottom of the email problem, though. Many users like to get confirmation emails for their submits. I have had an occasional email problem, but 3 out of 5 sounds a little high to me for a random type problem.
