One other suggestion is to involve the surfer a bit more.
Some surfers actually enjoy reading, are affected by what they read, and can be persuaded as much or more with the words you write about the content in your gallery as they are by the pics.
Without persuasive copy accompanying the pics you'll really just be giving away content with little chance of getting anything besides the rare lucky signup.
