Puppy News

The puppy got a fright today when some idiot threw a cyclist at him!

We were walking home when an idiot cyclist came round a blind corner at speed and nearly hit the puppy. He slung on the brakes fast and the bicycle stopped pretty much instantly. Unfortunately his body was not so obliging and insisted on obeying those pesky laws of inertia. He came flying off the bike and was thrown at speed onto the ground exactly where the puppy had been standing. Fortunately the puppy has perfected the "flight" part of the "fight or flight impulse" and at the first squeal of the bicycle's brakes he demonstrated the better part of valour.

At the point in time where the cyclist landed where the puppy had been, the puppy was as far away from the spot as the lead would let him. The lead is ten yards long, so the cyclist missed him by thirty foot. He was standing on a nearby bridge watching nervously!

As a result, instead of crushing the puppy, the cyclist landed hard on his face on the paving stones, the rest of his body following a fraction of a second later. I don't think he was broken in any way, but he was in quite a bit of pain as I helped him up. But I have no sympathy for him because:

1) He came round a blind corner at speed - asshole.
2) He had just cycled past a big "No Cycling" sign put up because it is a dangerous place to cycle.
3) He went through two chicanes put up to stop cyclists. To have reached the speed he came round the bend when he had the accident, he must have not only ignored the chicanes, he must have done so at a fair speed.
4) He narrowly missed running into the puppy, if his brakes had been slightly slacker he would have hit and injured the puppy.
5) The puppy only escaped injury because he has a fast "run away" instinct. If, instead of the puppy, it had been a young child, the child would have most likely frozen, the cyclist would have fallen on the kid and either injured or killed the kid.

So I have no sympathy for the cyclist, and thinking about it - I'm kind of sorry he did not get broken, just a little bit.
