Someone will buy your domain and redirect any traffic that you had coming to it.
Do yourself a favor and spend the few dollars to renew it.
If you want to start using another domain that is fine. Just point both of your domains to the same server. No traffic lost, and now you have two domain names for the SE spiders to chew on.
