www

Got a question I got banned for not using www. in my URL submit by a LL. I know I should have read the rules better. Yet I am not sure why thats a big deal. In fact the sponsors URL did not use the www either.
Just wondering.
Thanks Mike

Hi Mike. I hope that wasn't me that banned you but it may have been. I know with my link list's I've had that rule in place for some time. It goes back to about a year ago I think when I got slammed daily with 100's of bogus submits from cheating jerks. The one quick way to identify them (since they used different ips, emails, domains and submit names) was by the fact that they didn't include the "www" in their url's. I know I'm not the only one with this rule but I'm probably more of a stickler about it than most. This probably sounds weird to some but it helped me weed out the bad folks and ban them.

I've never used www in front of my domains.

My understanding is that it doesn't matter if you use it or not but it is important to always use one or the other as far as search engines go..

Sorry Mike. I try to keep my rules "standard" except maybe that one about the www. It's just because of what happened with the spammers in the past. Maybe it's time I removed that....

Please PM me your submit name, domain and IP address and I'll take you off the blacklist. I didn't realize you where a GG&J member.

I remember a thread here, some time ago, where it was discussed that the PR was different for a site with and without the www. I suspect that based on this that some webmasters decided it would be advantageous to insist on one or the other.

I remember that too. I use .htaccess to redirect all traffic (and presumably PR) to my WWW subdomain. If you link to me without the www, visitors will still end up in the www.

I have to admit, that is a very clever way to deal with that type of problem.

From what I have read - I think it is better to use one or the other becuase the search engines now see:

www.domain.com

&

domain.com

as to seperate entities and therefore duplicate content.

I don't think it matters which you use so long as your consistant with links, internal links, recips and so on
