To all the Link List Owners

I wanted to know how you got started with the link list you now have?

To be more exact how did you start to get traffic to it? Was it mainly trades that worked for you? or someother thing?

Besides this how did you grow your site(s)?

And is it better to have different types of link lists(niche ones) or is it best to have a general one?

Really has it changed that much? I know that it has change a lot (from what I've read) and you have to change with the times as well. But does the method of getting traffic differ that much right now than it was when you started?

If you had to start all over right now how would you go about doing it?

I am new at this so I would know how it was back when you started this is why I am asking this.

If I had to start all over, I'd 1st be prepared to work 1-2 years on my link list before I saw a decent amont of traffic & revenue.

Trade links with other people, work on SE stuff, read & post on the board, as for webmaster link trades, buy traffic?, have a 24 hour turn around time on submits, work your ass off & don't expect to make money in the near future.

I can say that I just started a new LL, and that's pretty much my plan. It's like any new aspect of any biz you're in...there's gonna be a learning curve and usually a delay before you actually start being successful. I've helped myself along by making some special offers on listings (temporary no recip, extra weight with a recip-since my script allows that, etc.) to get people to list their sites. I haven't posted any special offers here since I'm new here and I generally try to avoid looking like a drive-by spammer, but anyone interested can feel free to email me at (webmaster @ fetishphiles dot com) and I'll be happy to extend the offers to anyone here.

Also, I do try to approve links as quickly as possible, just as GG suggested. When the list is new, I think you have to take care of the webmasters more than the surfers, since you're asking people to give recips to a list that isn't generating that much traffic to begin with.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah I agree GG basically you do have to work your ass off......some people think that you can just get in and make money off the bat, but that aint it. You have to get used to the fact that in the begining no one will make much money. It takes time to build this. Some people fail to see this as a business but that is the way your suppose to look at it. This is a business and you have to run it as one.

BTW is there a limit to how many hard links you can have on a site?

And does it make more sense to start getting SE traffic to your freesites and galleries rahter than your own LL or TGP? or Vice Versa?

I am asking this becuase most sites require recips and thoses links will be spidered by the SE's. What is the best way to begin with this?

I am making my freesites SE friendly, but just want to know which way is best...or maybe do all of this SE(for all the sites) at the same time.

How many free sites do you have out there?

I think..if I were to start a LL it would be well after I have a load of free sites under my belt. I'm not sure what a "load" would constitute though.

I'd probably start off the LL as a niche LL of content I like to see.

The more focused the better because even if you have a few uniques per day if I make a 'teen female with glasses' site and that's your niche then all your surfers are more valuable (to webmasters) than a general LL.

How will you get us to add you to the ever growing amount of lists?

Maybe, after you have the domain and branding and niche down, and some of your own free sites to pepper the vigin list you can go on Overture and AdWords and announce on the boards you will be spending $1000 on very specific searches for your niche.

Announce it a week before you go live with the PPC advertising on all the boards and you should get a lot of submissions and a fair amount of traffic so everyone wins.

If you do it right and make a nice list that is updated often you should land surfers that bookmark you and happy webmasters.

Just random thoughts....

How did you end up starting a LL anyways? Did folks back in the golden age start them purely as a hobby at first?

Did you start by making free sites or just putting up links with affiliate codes?

Thanks for the reply Alphawolf.......I was thinking of having at least 1000 freesites before even trying to get other webmaster to submit to me. And before letting people know about submissions i will get SE done( as soon as the site is devloped) to get traffic to it.

The only thing I am confused about is getting the freesites or the Link List ready for SE nd have them optimized for it. I dont know which ones to start with first............Thisis what I was thinking maybe I am worng.

First while i make each freesite I will of course make it SE friendly and hopefully get some traffic from SE from this. Then as I devleop the LL I will also have this Optimized and have my freesites on my LL's. Now since my freesites have been spidered by the SE and I have them on my LL now this will get my site spidered too.

Now is this right? Is this how it works?

I would start putting in my own LL recip on all the free sites I submit. A link is a link and if the bots find it they should eventually make it to your LL site.

It's gonna take a while to see the results of your SEO work considering the competition you have.

Make a good LL for surfers first and just keep all the SEO stuff in mind...it will work itself out.

I dont look down that...actually I think its a good move if it fits in with the link tables and your site structure. Cleo is a lovely example of promoting her own link list within free sites.

Hey... when we started we used to make free sites and galleries that didnt have sponsor links... just promoted our own link list!!

I suppose it all depends on how much you want bookmarkers... and how imporant sales from free sites are to you at this point in your career.

Back in 96, it was just a hobby for me & a buddy of mine. There were no link lists or tgp's or galleries or free sites (as defined by today's terms) We just put pages up on the web with links to sites we liked

I don't think I built a free site until 99 - it was just the Link O'Rama for the 1st few years

it is not so much of a brainer as you may think, if you start off of a blank domain without traffic, i suggest:

1. there is no seo you need besides correct htm (titles, links, anchortext) forget fancy stuff just have good text and an easy navigation. chose a few categories you have already free sites for.
2. submit to ll's and have a recip back to your site.
3. look for free site submitters who also are starting their ll. submit at his site and have him submit at yours.
4. trade links with other linklists.
5. dont be afraid of linking to others, dont panic you are not loosing traffic
6. list your sites at resource sites
7. never drop links without notice, dont try to be a smartass hiding/removing links this will spoil everything
8. be prepared to accept "bad" link conditions at the beginning because after a while you can make the rules

i remember him looking for hardlink trades in autumn 2002, to get traffic takes a lot of time. to be top 100,000 in alexa you need 10k-15k visitors daily.
