Google Dupe Page Question ?
Does anyone know if Googles dupe page filter is just for the index page or is it for all pages on your site ? For example I have a few niche hub sites which I have mostly filled with that niche, but on one of them I have reality niche site reviews on them.
What I would like to know is will my site get kicked if I use those same pages and templates on all my other niche hub sites? I will of course change the color and text to fit each of the niche sites I have but nothing else. Also all of the indexes will be different besides the links to the reality niche site reviews. Thanks in advance for any help you can give JoeBlack Last edited by JoeBlack; 2004-12-14 at 09:59 PM.. |

IMO..
You do run the risk of one of them being "downgraded" by google if it finds two pages with the same content(colours and fonts wont change anything)... That said.... being only 2 copies of the pages in the millions googlebot crawls, it is unlikely any penalty will be applied. So its up to you... ![]() DD

On the first question, I would agree with Dave. There's a risk, but a fairly small one. It's not optimum, and it would be worth your while IMO to take a few minutes and build some variations into the pages. But I have quite a few similar pages distributed across many domains, they do get PR, and have a chance of coming up acceptably high in some searches.
(Does having similar pages drag a whole domains listings down in the serps? I don't know, but I suspect it does.) What platemen suggests, however, is probably not a good idea. You might get some extra listings for a while, but before long, if they stay similar, google will probably devalue one, and it will probably be the older one, wether or not it has higher pr. And the chances of both domains crashing in the serps right away is pretty high. Google seems a lot more quick to apply a devalueation when it sees multiple similar pages together on multiple domains, than it does to single similar pages. If you put enough work into it to make it's checksums different, well, that might get by. |

..and I would agree with Bill on the second one...
"mirroring" a linklist... I would not do... Again the certainty of a "penalty" is not written in stone.. but I would not risk it. Plateman.. changing everything but the desciptions and titles might give you some protection.. but IMO it would still be a risk.. DD

Thanks for your input DD and Bill. I have decided just to build different pages for them and optimizing them for other key terms related to them.
plateman that was a very good question. How much difference do the sites have to be in order you not to get penalized for it. If you have a site porn*****.com which is seo'ed for the keyword porn and then make a dupe site xxx*****.com with all the porn keywords becoming xxx keywords how would the bot know its the same site if it has different keywords and urls. Also if they are that strict do they penalize free sites and link list for having the same warning text in there site? Because im sure that most webmasters got there warning from someone else. ![]() It is in fact similar to a practice used by spammers - build something, get it ranked then build the same thing replacing x KWs with x KW, - then do it again , etc... I would by choice start afresh... each time. You will find that you build with similarities anyway, and if you follow the principles that you have learnt the "2nd version" should do as well as the first. DD

Here's something similar that I have been considering. I have a second very stagnant TGP that I would like to overhaul and have it draw in listings from the TGP I actually take the time to maintain. Obviously, the listings and descriptions would be identical, but my good TGP has separate catagory pages. On the second TGP, I want to put the links all on a single page divided by category, rather than all of the separate pages. This seems like a monster of a change to me, but I'm no guru. Would Google and its little step-sisters note the identical links and descriptions even though the two sites would have completely different structures?

With the examples that you guys are mentioning, it basically boils down to this- if you build in enough variation, you'll probably do okay.
This is an area of search engine work where pretty much everyone is in the dark. Nobody knows exactly how googles similarity algos work; and, they are apparently slightly changed on a regular basis. How much variation do you need? How different do the pages have to be? Nobody knows- but it's not that much. But, to get the best advantage in the serps, to get the best chance of being in the top 40, pretty much everyone agrees the more unique text your pages have, the better. Linklists and TGPs are packed with "similar" descriptions, similar lines of text, but they do fairly well in getting top positions. Just changing the filenames and directory names is not good- thats quite easy to filter for, pages with identical checksums except for the easily changed filenames, spam algos have been keying on those for years now. |

Boy that would be a nice tool to have is a link description generator, put in some keywords and pick how many words and presto paste it in and run.. add 50 pay sites and write a good but not over spamy description, takes a long ass time..

Ok so I understand that the content cant be the same what about the design? I would like to use the same design that I have on my link list now but for a tgp. Most of the designs are just images so I wouldnt think they would have a problem with that. Also it will be on another domain name but with TGP links only. Do you think google would have a problem with that ?
I ask and think this is possible because of Jays XXX Porn Movies Site. It is basically the same design just different links to movie free sites instead of free sites. Just wondering as I am trying to keep it all braned and fitting the same design type. Thanks |

Joe, I would say you would be fairly safe in doing that.
If it was my page, I'd change the names of the graphic images and change the alt text, but doing that probably doesn't add that much important variation to the page. |
