Should I Drink Coffee Again?

OK, here it is. We found out my mum has a bone-wasting disease. Our 4 year old Morgan actually broke 2 of my mom's ribs just by giving her a hug. She's having various treatments with the hopes of making her bones less brittle. The outlook for her, as long as she has no accidents like breaking a hip, is pretty positive.

So come 1st Jan, 2005, I'll have given up smoking for exactly 12 months. I also gave up drinking coffee which I used to love beyond words. Since my mom's condition MIGHT be hereditory, I cut out anything that might cause me to suffer the same fate.

So my question is : Is coffee really all that bad for your heart and your bones? I'm told there's just as much caffeine in tea which i still drink. Do you reckon I continue my abstinance or can I treat myself to a couple of cups of coffee a day?

OK. I had to ask because, as you know, you have to want to give up to actually give up.

Here's how I did it.

Cold turkey.

Despite popular opinion, in an age rife with patches and tobbacco gum, simply quiting and riding it out is the easiest way to do it.

If you use patches or any other means which give you small tastes of nicotine, you become frustrated and soon want the real thing as opposed the substitute. It's like dieting. If you eat those 28 calorie bars of chocolate all they make you want to do is eat the real 300 calorie bars.

Here's what you do.

Set a date for your last smoking day. When you're smoking the last cig, tell yourself that it is your last. Enjoy the moment. Fix the moment in your memory as the time you last had a smoke. That last time. MOST importantly make sure you have that last cig JUST BEFORE going to bed.

When you wake up in the morning, it is the start of your new non-smoking life.

Set aside 3 days to 1 week off work. Go out and buy packs of gum. Rent out 3 or 4 movies a day. The first 3 days are the worst. You'll have the shakes, your head will be up your ass. Stay in bed, drink plenty of water and, if you like, coffee. Don't try to do anything that can be frustrating. Your motor skills are reduced. If you feel like sleeping then do it.

Now ask yourself a question. Can you survive a week without a smoke?

If the answer is yes, then you are 99% on your way to giving up.

The honest truth is that the first 3 days is hardest. After 1 week you can resume work and will only suffer from mild pangs of addiction. Come a month and you'll know in yourself that you'll never smoke again.

It really is that easy.

Put aside a week off work. Sleep. Watch movies. Drink water. Chew gum. Make it through that tunnel of 1 week and you'll be a non-smoker at the end.

Hope it helps.

Good luck, not that you'll need it. It really is a piece of piss once you get past those 3 days. Let me know how you've got on next year

man, hope your Mom can keep her standard of living up.

"All things in moderation."

Actually, I'm not sure why you thought switching to tea was an alternative. Yeah- tea usually has more caffeine than coffee.

Anywho, there was an Oprah show a LONG time ago I caught. It was pretty interesting. Some doctors did a book long term study of what things efected life span both in a good way and a bad way.

Excersise increased life span the most and they had a woman who was like 70 yrs old come out doing yoga and flexing herself all around.

They went over a lot of common things people eat/drink/do and when they got to coffee everyone was ready for bad news.

Surprise- it did not reduce life span or increase it. Oprah was like 'thank you, lord'.

Now, I think most people have shit coffee every day. If you get a nice capresso machine and some kona beans- it's almost like exercising every morning.

Isn't there some test you can have if this is in your gene's?

That's some great info, thanks AW.

I've had a bone density test and I'm fine. Unfortunately there's no test to predict if I'll get it in the future.

With no kitchen I've had to look for other sources of wake-me-ups. I've found shooting cocaine first thing in the morning seems to be an interesting way to start the day.
