Anyone remember when newsgroups where useable?

All this talk of GUBA lately got me thinking back to when we utilized the newsgroups daily. Not sure how many of you were around back then but I can remember going through the PHP, CGI, and SQl newsgroups trying to find info/tips when building some of our original stuff. I guess with the advent of all the messageboard software it became pretty irrelevant. I do however have the same old newsreader installed and checked and the paid access I had to them works... I'm similar to one of our best customers, been billing for 7+ years

I used newsgroups at one time for tech support and stuff like that. Never used them for porn but then I've never surfed for porn. Oddly it was just a few weeks ago that I got curious to see if newsgroups were still around and was looking at what was out there still out there.

Toolz, I can remember when the newsgroups, Archie, and Veronica were about the only way to get anything (pre-browser days). the newgroups got lost in spam, petty power trips, weird politics, and http.

Now it is mostly a useless cesspool of people still living in 1993. Decent chat board software with simple moderation has made the usenet nothing but a very quaint throwback, similar to visiting an amish village. I am sure there are some people in there doing some good stuff, but it isn't hardly worth the effort to go see.

Newsgroups are nowadays bigger than they ever were..
But finding a normal message between all the HDTV, DVD and DVD-rips is nearly impossible

Toolz,

Sup man!

Your ISP should provide you with Usenet access as part of your account. The address is usually the same as whatever kind of connection you have. ie: news.earthlink.com with the same user/pass as your email account.

I used to like a few groups but they are pretty much all spam nowadays.

Some of the Microsoft groups you can still get some good info.

Multimedia groups are much bigger now that's for sure.
