I don't like Ike
This isn't looking good. The little red diamond between the projected path and Galveston Bay is my approximate location.

I had wondered how close it was going to meander towards you. Batten down the hatches and good luck. Hopefully it won't strengthen much.

I hear ya Toby. I have family just south of you and they will probably be here sometime tomorrow. Worst part is, even I might get some high winds and lots of rain out of this one too. Hope you have the generator rented again.

For everyone in the Galveston Bay area either batten down the hatches or get out now! It looks like Ike will be at least Category 3 when it hits, and the bridge out of Galveston will probably be impassable.
I feel for ya, no doubt. I lived in Dickinson, just up the road from Galveston when Hurricane Andrew hit, and it ain't fun... roads flooded, no electricity, etc. |

I would normally tell y'all on the coast to head on in -- I either have room or have friends with room, but this time, even I am looking at having to more to a "real" structure. The latest this morning puts me on the edge of the tropical winds, which might mean I will be okay in a trailer. Our company has already put the notice out that our office in Corpus Christi is closed until Monday, and I expect we will be shuttering Galveston, Houston, and Beaumont today. The boss is in Phoenix, so I don't think he is going to be aware enough to know that a lot of us are a bit, ummm distracted right now.
LD, I am right there with you. Maybe we should all plan a party somewhere and ride it out???

Yeah, Toby, I didn't like Ike much either when it was pointed almost directly at us. (And I really thought about using the I Don't Like Ike phrase as a thread title since I remember there was a time people wore I Like Ike buttons.) We were lucky and it mostly passed by us with some help from Cuba, but that storm track does look like it's headed right at you now, and forecasts say probably Cat 3 when it gets there. If you have a good 'hunker-in-place' strategy, and are well-supplied in a survivable building, you may be fine there. Otherwise it may be time to consider going inland a bit.
I hope something happens to weaken Ike or that it at least heads for the least populated areas up there (I don't say that when they come here since we are the least populated area).

I've long believed that one of the things which should disqualify someone from being president is any desire to be president. Same with most political positions. People should be drafted to serve and no one should be allowed to 'make a career' of politics. Just one more way I'm twisted.

Looks like it's going to be a bad storm.
I wish you all the best, and if you live near the coast please move inland just to be on the safe side. |

My drug dealer just came by and had been fishing at the Cedar Point pier in southern Alabama, which is 6-8 feet above the water. Said the storm surge from Ike had the water almost up to the walkway. Could be a bad one.

We're not right on the coast. Southwest Houston is actually about 25-30 miles inland, not that it will make that much difference in wind speed, but we don't have to worry about storm surge.
We're going to hunker down and ride it out. We have a generator in case we lose power, although it's not big enough to run the A/C. Last edited by Toby; 2008-09-11 at 10:38 AM.. |

Texans have not made any announcement re: Ike. The storm will be well out of the area by Sunday afternoon, so unless the stadium is unplayable I'm assuming the game will go as scheduled. Attendance may be off a bit though. |

Ummm...anyone one that has driven a car without AC knows that all you have to do to cool you off is open a window.
I think the same will apply for Toby I just heard (from a caller on on Ron & Fez) that they have issued a mandatory evacuation for southern Houston & the county. |

Yeah, eight zip codes in southeast Harris County are closer to Galveston Bay, slightly lower in elevation, and therefore far more likely to flood due to storm surge.
