Yeah but GoDaddy are incompetent and dishonest. Only a fool would use them for an important domain!

Dishonest in what way? I've heard stories with respect to their hosting services, but have never had any issues personally with registering or maintaining domains.

If you search Google you will find plenty of posts on plenty of boards from people who have been screwed over by them in different ways. There is little point in me repeating other people's comments, however I'll add my own experience with GoDaddy:

When the domain registrar I used to use ceased to operate ICANN split my domains between two other registrars, one of which was GoDaddy. GoDaddy offered me free "domain privacy" for a year on all domains. I took up this offer. One year later I was a bit short of cash and decided I didn't need "domain privacy" on all my sites and now the free year was up it was costing me several hundred dollars a year. So when I renewed the domains I tried to cancel the "domain privacy" on about 90% of the sites.

I tried to log in to the domain privacy section but my password failed. So I contacted GoDaddy. After several emails they told me that when they set up the domain privacy they had accidentally not used my password but had set up a new one. So I replied asking them either to change the password to the one I had originally chosen or to tell me what the password they used was. They refused to do either. So I asked them to cancel the domain privacy. They refused to do that too. So now I they are forcing me to to pay several hundred dollars a year for a service I do not want, and have told them (several times) that I do not want it.

And the worst part is that GoDaddy will not let me transfer the domains to another registrar (which I think is against ICANN rules). So the only way I can escape is by letting the domains expire, which I have done with a few, but most are money making domains that I don't want to loose. So each year GoDaddy steals several hundred dollars from me.

And if you use a board tracker to search across the various webmaster boards (not just adult webmasters, all types of websites) you will find piles of posts about different scams that GoDaddy use to obtain money from clients that they are not entitled to take.

You will also find plenty of posts from people who say that GoDaddy's security is crap, and once you have built up good traffic it is easy for a dishonest webmaster to steal your domain name.

If you search the board, you will find some horror stories - not so many lately, but back when they 1st came on the scene, there were many problems - just like the ones ecchi posted about - and it seems that none have been fixed.

Well they've got a hell of a business, being able to conduct such unethical practices while being untouchable, is not necessarily unique, but unfortunate nothing is being done.
