Yeah I've been getting them too.

I also get 500+ a day from many other places.

This on top of worms and viruses.

I hate all this crap in my mail. |raygun|

I use an e-mail client with a really good SPAM filter. If I didn't I would never be able to find most of my mail.

My hosting company did some sort of email filter upgrade on their system and my virus and bullshit is down to less then 1 a day now.

My Spam net filter catches almost half of my spam. (Currently 3828 as of this month) and my Outlook rules catch most of the rest. (4075 as of this month.)

My total Spam Net stats:

My time saved: 383.85 hours
Spamnet stopped 138,188 spam messages
I've blocked 2,867 spam messages
Total checked: 169,757 messages

Although a did notice an influx of bullshit penis enlargemaent ads getting through this month.

I love to see when these fuckers get huge fines.

got a few dozen spams today that pretty much all tried to sell me Viagra. Do the know something I don't? But here is what caught me off guard, and yes I have seen it before.......it is this;
Vi'agra
*v.i.a.g.r.a.*
pe-nis enla-rgeme'nt
v-i-a-g-r-a-
Now here is my question to them, so if anyone here spams please let me know, I know that they mess with the spelling in order to bypass good ole spam filters/rulesets. So I set up a ruleset that says, in effect "I don't want Viagra, I won't buy Viagra, I am not interested in any deals for Viagra" Do these people not realise that if I took the time to set up a ruleset on my mail program to automatically delete any mention of Viagra, that sending me spam about it will only serve to piss me the f&%k off! I mean too many of them and guess who is going to report it? Yeah yeah, I know it does no good, but it makes ya feel warm and fuzzy bitching at someone about it heh heh. How can these people possibly make money?

Spam will always be around no matter how many new laws they make to stop it. As long as I dont get spammed CP, I'll let the filters take care of it.

DrB: You don't get much spam, do ya? I don't have an accurate count, but the last time I turned the filters off for a single download of mail (15 minute block) I got about 80 pieces. that would be 320 an hour... 7500+ per day.

Thankfully, filters keep it down to a VERY few pieces now, mostly VG-RX (they use a very complicated system to split words up in their spams, and use common everyday subject lines that you cannot filter out without losing regular mail).

I won't even discuss the number of bounce mails and "your mail has a virus" reports I get for klez virus (which fakes headers, idiot sys admins shoudl turn off notification, it just clogs things up worse and scares people for no reason) and such.

At this point, I am just short of turning email off completely and just auto-responding "FUCK OFF" to every thing that comes in. It is insane.

You want my attention? fax me.

I am now getting spammed on domains which I haven't even assigned to hosting yet.

Professional spammers probably know more about email protocol and spam filters than the software developers working against them.

I love the supposed lady (Sarah something) that has been emailing all my address for years telling me one site or another isn't on a search engine (even when it is) and that they can help me get it there. Like them the most because they sometimes take screenshots of my sites and put it inthe body of the mail.

I never read any spams except the one that tried to sell me land from the moon - that was funny. Also those Nigerian bank scams are funny like hell. I have read that many companies have paid and lose their monies. Right for them. If you're fool enough to believe that someone will actually send some $20 million to your bank account, you're fool enough to believe they need that $4000 you send them to do it.

Some spammers try to be clever, they use titles like "re: your order" - nice try but no cigar...

Some looks like idiots, use titles like "hi, me here". Must be newbie spammers...at least those who post with male name...

I delete all spam first thing every morning. I don't use any blockers as I don't have it a lot, but if it increases, then I will.

Here in Finland spamming is a treason. No finnish company or individual can spam. If they do, I just call the cops.

I hope someday it will work world wide.

Urb, the problem that exists with mail (as it is right now) is that the protocol for sending mail from one server to another isn't secure in the slightest.

The sending server calls your server, can tell it that it is ANYONE, and dump as much mail as it can on that server in one shot. Nothing is done to confirm the identity of the sender, or the IP, or the location (except to require a header with this info in it, which isn't checked). Sort of the like the old airport quesiton "did you pack your own bag? Did anyone give you somehting to carry on?"... what, do you think the terrorists are going to say YES? Just like do you expect the spammers to say yes?

protocol should be Sender contacts you server, says I am at this IP, contact me for mail. Then the receive "calls back" to get the info. Right away, alot of spam would disappear because it would be much harder to fake where spam is coming from.

That should be applied all the way along the chain. It would be "slower" to mail, in theory, but in reality, if you got rid of 25% of the spam on the net, it would be faster for everyone.

Until something like that happens, we will see a boat load of spam every day.
