Arrow Re: newsletter topic free email accounts

I'm sorry, but I'll keep on using my free email, and there are at least a dozen reasons for free email accounts:

1. convenience: I can check my mail anywhere without any problems! I have been many times overseas during my webmaster years, and a yahoo/hotmail (or in my case gmx.net) email account can easily be checked anywhere without arousing any suspicion!
2. I feel confident opening my emails at friends' places or in internet cafes, even if people around me are not supposed to know about the adult stuff.
3. one time before travelling I had set up a mail server on my domain, only to find that in many internet cafes their 'adult filtering software' blocked my entire domain, meaning mail too!
4. at least with this knowledge that I can easily access my mail from anywhere I will not miss anything important (like un-authorised domain changes, etc.)
5. for this reason I'm rather worried that with a few sponsors I was forced to use my domain based email, because at time I can't access it, and might miss things like sudden changes in conditions or (worse!) changed link syntax for all sites (we had that happen before!)
6. forget ISP based emails! In my case I have stopped using any ISP mail in 1997, after my third ISP move. In 1999 I went through 6 (that's SIX) ISPs in one year = 6 times changing email address - no, thanks!
7. consistency: I have the same 2 free email accounts for years now! They're reliable and safe!
8. spam filtering: most good free emails offer excellent free spam filtering, so I don't have to wade through tons of unwanted emails to find the few important ones.
9. spam avoidance: so many bots screening boards like this for email addresses; I'd rather have my 'free email' spidered than one at my domain. Same applies to worms, because I know that emails at my free email account are screened by the latest virus scanner available.
10. lazyness: my free email account holds mails only for 3 days in the spam folder, for 2 months in the in-box. If I haven't forwarded them then they're simply deleted and gone for ever! At least I don't have to bother going through my mail box every few weeks and deleting all the trash - they do it for me...
11. I know of sponsors who are incredibly slow with any change of address. In 2000 Trafficcash took over 3 months to change my mailing address, sending all checks to an outdated address in Germany, from where I had to get them to Australia. Imagine a change of home address combined with a change of email address: such a case you would never get sorted (because the emails would go to the wrong address, too).
12. this year when I went to Europe I simply forgot to take the password for my domain based email account - and couldn't access it for over 9 weeks! What 'professional impression' does that leave, if I don't answer my emails that long?
13. I could go on - but I've filled the first dozen easily

Most of those problems could be addressed by using
http://mail2web.com/

And everything else you have mentioned is far outweighed by not being able to submit to many link lists and tgps.

My e-mail client has very good spam filtering so I don't really have a problem with spam.

Since I own my domains my address never changes.

I can check my mail anyplace that I am without problem or worry as I can a laptop which also means that all my info is with me and I can sit down and work wherever I am.

I also have my submits taken everywhere since I don't use a free mail account.

I'm going to put my neck on the chopping block and say I agree with George on a lot of points. I'm still using the Yahoo mail address I set up 4 years ago (and which I've used to sign up to an awful lot of sponsors - I shudder to think of the hassle of changing it over).

Of course, I also have my domain-based email address which I use to submit... and numerous other addresses to use for looking businesslike. So I think it's handy to have both.

One of the main reasons I still like Yahoo mail is the spam filtering, and also the fact that I can read it in Mozilla. The domain-based email that I use for submits began to fill with spam the day after I first used it, and the filters on that mail program are quite useless.

With Yahoo you can now set it to collect mail from normal pop3 addresses and to use a domain@domainname.com address as the reply address. So the two things can be combined.

Of course, you still have to put up with yahoo ads, so it's not perfect. And I can see the point being made about the impression it can give. Nonetheless, not all people who use free email addresses are scammers

Hopefully this post won't make you think I'm unbusinesslike. It's just a preference.

it's definately handy to have both.... i use my 2 free email accounts considerably more than i use my domain emails. actually a couple of my domains are automatically forwarded to my free emails.

does anyone want a gmail account?....lol

I also have a Yahoo and gmail addy and I am using the gmail one for taking subissions for my tgp... sometimes I am getting like 1,000 per day, mostly crap so they better go there imo.

Yahoo is updating the free email addresses to 250 MB and used the domain key to identify spammers and I have been using it from day # 1.

But mail2web what Jim suggested is aslo good just a tad bit slow so I stopped using them.

Damn if ya do damn if ya don't. I have alot of email addies hell we got a ton of domains at work.
Updating a email addy is no biggie though.
The mistake I made is I had a spam free addy til I used it for submitting.
ASSHOLE webmaster along with sponsors spam me up with it all the time.
I use one email for submitting to LL's and don't get much
only from new spiders that I didn't put in robot txt.
Back in my hacking days you'd be surprised what people kept in hotmail and yahoo accounts
I wuld never keep anything important inthem but people do.

A have one of the world's shittiest and lowest traffic TGPs, but even I ban hotmail, yahoo, and gmail. I prefer the legitimacy of domain based email as well as the fact that those who use free email accounts tend to be the ones with free hosts. Damn them all!

For all the reasons above I have never and will never use free email to submit to lists.
Though I see some valid reasons for liking the free email features I see it like
this is a give and get situation you either give a valid non free email and get a larger list of links that will accept you or you dont and you miss out.
Personally I want the ll reviewer to know it is me. No if ands or buts just knowing it is a real person on a valid domain helps.
If I have to
a. remember my password
b. dump spam every so often
then so be it.
Whether a site gets accepted or not at least I did not screw myself before the reviewer even looked at my site.

Ah - yeah - right: how many internet cafes allow you to plug your own computer into their network? Maybe 1 out of 20 (if you're lucky). And when I travel I'm usually not in posh hotels with the latest up-to-date DSL network and internationally compatible plugs, and even at many of the ones which had all that stuff it took me ages to get my network card and stuff set up so that I could use my laptop on their DSL connection (and pay a fortune for the privileg)... Whereas the free email I can check on free internet access in airports and budget internet cafes, and it takes me less than 1/2 time to be in & out as it takes me to get my laptop even connected to some weird network set-up (and I have seen some really weird ones in places like Malaysia or Croatia...)

Ah - yeah - I can probably name some 20-30 TGPs who won't even accept domain based emails anymore (and I'm sure there are hundreds more)!
They think spammers and cheaters register domains by the dozen, and once one is blacklisted move on to the next... [true + true!]

And as I said: I haven't used an ISP based email since 1997!
It wouldn't help much with submissions either since I'm not a very loyal ISP customer (due to 90% of them here in OZ being unreliable or too expensive, the only good one I ever used [dingoblue] unfortunately went broke), and submit email is about using an established and recognisable name (which I couldn't establish with all my ISP changes - I'm probably at ISP #20-22 right now).

My free email with web.de in Germany is the closest to any reliable and trustworthy free email service you can get: one only gets an account after one has entered a confirmation code sent to your home address via snail mail (so it's not anonymous at all!), their virus checker and spam filter is top notch, and they even block outgoing mass emailing...

I guess some people seem to have the same 'double standard view' of free emails as you, Greenguy, have about free counters: not allowed to be used on any site submitted to you, but you happily use Sextracker on your pages!

ooops: take that foot out of my mouth

As someone mentioned I think 'send copy' (or just 'forward') your mails to the free email account would be best idea.
I'm a newbie in this biz but as far when I do my reviews, I don't know why, the worst submissions come from free email accounts...

Looks like you don't know or forget about what happened with the last promising free counter, porngraph back in April.. even Shemp and other big tgp owners used it and it was sold and the new owner started installing spyware and making some fast millions in no time, doing harm to honest webmasters.

And just so you know, mail2web is not a free email.. so I don't understand your bitter double standard remarks, sorry. It is good to access your email from anywhere, anytime and for free.

Have I ever said I was using my free email account for submissions btw? Show me where and when, please.

Guess what lol.. there is one tgp webmaster to whom I've been submitting using a yahoo email address as a noob but whenever I tried to switch to my domain based email later, I couldn't get listed.

Oh and this guy accepts a few free hosts too, God bless him, did I tell you it's the Hun?

Sorry, couldn't resist

Can you please share with the rest of the group the page or pages that are on link-o-rama.com that have counters? Because I think I removed them all a long time ago, but I might have missed some page that no one ever sees.

mail2web.. or squirelmail.. or some other web based interface to your domain email is available as standard from many adult hosts... if you have a host email account, you might even have it available and not realise.

Your ISP will also almost certainly provide a web based email interface.

Do you want to use yahoo because its free or because you can use it from anywhere?

11 of GeorgeTH's problems related to wanting web based e-mail. All of those are solved easilly without the email acccount having to be free and anonymous.

This is why I'm going to have webmasters start mailing their submits. I say make them go out and buy a stamp each time that want to do a submit.

No, but some of them actually accept my gmx.net email (probably because it's not so well known as a free email - being now in German only), most of them want to see an ISP email address...

Here's reason #13: how do I communicate with the tech of my host when my server goes down, and my only email account is on exactly that server? In my case ICQ is damned inconvenient because of time difference...

Most times, the mail server is not on your server. And, if your mail is down, theirs could be as well. Then, a phone call would be in order.

George, it was a tip and trick. I never actually thought that anyone would think using a free email address would be better than a "real" one.

And, I am still a little confused. Just give me 10 TGPs that don't allow domain based email addresses.

Sorry - I really don't have the time to do your work for you -
Multiple "Find And Replace" is good for problems like this.

I just know you're site is showing in the Sextracker stats [Link Sites] with something like 4,000 hits...
